Gothic Art Style
The rise of Gothic art when applied to painting came from not only the
rise of Cathedrals and influence by the Christians of that time period,
but also from the desire of the people to move beyond the Medieval Ages
and leave behind those sad, dark times. They needed an escape from what
had happened in the past. Gothic artwork itself is strikingly beautiful. This beauty is mirrored not only in the paintings of the movement, but in the construction of the towering cathedrals and sculptures. In sculpture in particular, the long, swaying figures were used over and over again and were usually a religious figure. Religion was prominent in Gothic art. The Virgin Mary was a popular figure for these paintings, and typically was shown holding the baby Jesus. Gothic art was strongly influenced by Naturalism as well. This style featured paintings and sculptures done in a realistic way, embracing the natural features of a person and nature itself. The religious paintings reflect the famous Biblical characters, such as the Virgin Mary and the disciples, as real people. The artwork may seem overwhelming and dark to us, yet it was intended to capture the beauty and the truth behind each piece. |
