Edvard Munch

The Norwegian painter Edvard Munch was born in 1863 in the province of Hedmark.

Already in 1868 the mother Munchs, in 1877 his sister died. After that the father was struck by depressions. These traumatic experiences stamped the later work of the artist.

In 1881 Edvard Munch began a study at the royal sign school in Oslo and created several naturalistic sceneries and portraits.

In 1885 Edvard Munch travelled to Paris and soon developed his own style which is marked by colours and forms in expressive execution.

In 1889 the artist had his first single exhibition. A state scholarship and a renewed trip to Paris followed.

In 1892 an exhibition Edvard Munchs released a scandal in Berlin and was closed.

During the following years Edvard Munch lived in Germany, Italy and France. After a nervous breakdown he returned in 1908 to Norway and created, among others his most famous work "the scream". He lived in Oslo and also more and more often he made wall paintings. In the 1930s he suffered from an ocular illness.

Edvard Munch died in 1944 in Ekley near Oslo.
