George Braque

George Braque was born on the 13th May, 1882 in a suburb by Paris and counts as a main representant of cubism.

George Braque made an education as decorator, signs up in 1902 in the Académie Humbert and starts to paint in 1904. He is so impressed by Matisse and Derain that he takes up the fauvistischen style. Fauves, his meeting with Picasso and the discovery Cézannes let George Braque begin form-analytic experiments.

Picasso and George Braque found the cubism: The classical phase divides in analytic and synthetic period.

The most important style element is the decomposition and analysis of an object on his basic forms. Reality relation gets lost, Colour and form structure dominate the pictures.

George Braque took part in the First World War, was wounded and came back in 1917 to Paris where he spent the rest of his lifetime.

From 1920 George Braque distinguished himself by more realistic and more picturesque technics. The second world war let the painter produce rather sober works.

31st August, 1963 George Braque died.
