Marc Chagall

Marc Chagall was born in 1887 in today's Bielorussia. Quite early he started to be interested in the painting and took lessons.

At the age of 20 years Marc Chagall travelled to Saint Petersburg where he continued his studies in the "imperial society for the support of the arts ".

In 1910 Marc Chagall visited first Paris, here he got to know the cubists and Fauvists who influenced his painting.

In 1915 Marc Chagall married Bella Rosenfeld. Three years later he was as a commissioner of the pedagogic arts again in Witebsk where it held him, nevertheless, not long. With stopover in Berlin Marc Chagall in 1923 completely moved to Paris.

He illustrated Gogols "the dead souls" and La Fontaines "fables".

Travelling followed to Palestine, Syria and Egypt and in 1941 the emigration to New York where he after some years exhibited in the museum of Modern Art.

In 1949 Marc Chagall returned to France (Saint Paul de Vence). In 1952 Marc Chagall married Vava Brodsky.

Letting the "Ismen" of the modern age behind himself for a long time, Marc Chagall devoted himself during later years of the sculpture as well as glass work on public buildings.

Marc Chagall died 1985 in Saint Paul-de Vence.
