Max Liebermann
Max Liebermann studied in Berlin and Weimar and lived afterwards on 1872 - 1878 in Paris. There Max Liebermann was influenced by the French early impressionists like Courbet or Corot. At times Liebermann worked even in the artist's school of Barbizon. A several years' stay followed in Munich. The pictures of this time as for example "DieGänserupferinnen" show, especially, working people.
In his late creating phase Max Liebermann portrayed, especially his own garden in Wannsee. Max Liebermann was president of the Prussian academy of the arts, but in 1933 was covered by the the Nazis with exhibit ban. While watching the Nazis march through the Brandenburg Gate celebrating the takeover of Adolf Hitler, Liebermann was reported to have commented: "Ich kann gar nicht so viel fressen, wie ich kotzen möchte," translated as "I could not eat as much as I would like to vomit." Max Liebermann died 1935 in Berlin. |
