Rene Magritte

The artist Rene Magritte was born in 1898 in Lessines in the Belgian Hennegau.

Rene Magritte studied from 1916 - in 1918 in the academy of arts in Brussels. There he got to know the cubism and futurism which influenced him in his own works strongly.

Nevertheless, stimulated by Giorgio de Chiricos painting the young artist found the way back to the concrete painting.

From 1927 Rene Magritte lived in Paris and got to know there many known surrealists. Rene Magritte showed his works several times with surrealism exhibitions.

Nevertheless, about the years Rene Magritte developed his quite own style which shows mostly realistic objects in a surreal sphere. Were and appearance, reality and invention became his subjects.

In 1928 Rene Magritte with "Ceci n'est pas un pipe" created - "This is no pipe" his probably most famous work. Rene Magritte also created several illustrations and wall paintings, for example, for a Belgian casino.

The meaning of Rene Magritt's works was recognised only in his last years. Rene Magritte died in 1967 in Brussels.
